The Southwest Children's Chorus was founded in 1999 by Michael King in response to the apparent need for community arts organizations in the Southwest Dallas County area.  Interested members of the community formed a Board of Directors that includes citizens from Dallas, DeSoto, Duncanville, Irving, Lancaster, Red Oak, and Waxahachie.  They secured the use of the facilities of the First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster, Texas, for rehearsals and meetings, then initiated an aggressive recruiting campaign.  Community interest in the Chorus was made abundantly clear when nearly 300 children signed up to audition that first year!

Members of the Southwest Children's Chorus range in age from 8 to 14.  The SWCC consists of multiple choirs, each representing a different level of vocal ability.  The Tour Choir is the highest-level artistic ensemble in the organization. Chosen from Concert Choir members, the Tour Choir undertakes a major summer concert tour lasting as long as two weeks. The Concert Choir is the principal performing ensemble of the Chorus, performing regularly in the DFW Metroplex with occasional weekend performance trips. The Preparatory Choir is the learning and teaching ensemble of the chorus which occasionally performs in the DFW area and will complete a short in-state trip at the end of the year.

Our Goals

The goal of the Southwest Children's Chorus is to provide any child, regardless of previous musical experience, with an outstanding performance-based music education program offered in a positive and nurturing environment. The Choir endeavors to foster the personal and social growth of its members and to promote their sense of self-esteem, accomplishment, and pride.  Furthermore, we strive to contribute to the cultural life of this area, the state of Texas, the nation, and the world.  The SWCC also hopes to increase the quality of singing in area schools and churches by providing an organization which can excel beyond the experience in average school or church choirs. Membership is open to children of ALL racial, cultural, religious, and economic backgrounds, based on an audition with the Music Director.
